Social Justice in Healthcare

At Nourishing NH, we believe in prioritizing social justice in our treatment approach. Implementing social justice in the healthcare field means to provide quality care to all regardless of their background and identity. In society today, there are marginalized groups that do not have equal access to healthcare.¹ According to the American Public Health Association, 30% of medical costs faced by Blacks, Hispanics, and Asian-Americans in the US are due to health inequities.² A recent study was conducted on nursing students to analyze the education they received during school and how well they were prepared to address social justice issues in the field. Upon interviewing the students, it was determined that they did not receive adequate education on social justice.³ This is important because it shows that health care providers may not be exposed to proper education. Dietitians are required to receive continuing education credits, including credits specific to ethics. At Nourishing NH, it is important that we use this opportunity for continuing education to further our knowledge on how we can provide ethical treatment to our clients. This includes prioritizing having a social justice lens in our treatment approaches. If this topic is of interest to you or if you are interested in receiving nutrition services, please reach out one of our wonderful dietitians to set up an initial session.
